Capacitor Install

The best Cap to use is anything over a 1000mf and at least 7.2 volts or more, the bigger the capacity of course the more voltage the cap will hold. You can get Caps just about anywhere but i got these at my local RadioShack for just a couple of bones. The next thing you want to do once you have the cap picked out is plan on where you want to solder the wire leads......I used 16 gauge because thats all i had in the box....You can either connect the cap directly to the battery leads of the esc or you can also connect it to the pcb board of the esc.....

I connected my leads directly to the PCB board because that would be the easiest for me to do. I also used Dean's Micro plugs for the wire leads on the esc....

Take a look at the pic for the wire leads.....

Now lets take a look at the cap.......on one side of the cap you have a line or stripe going down the side of the cap, this is your negative so solder on the corresponding wire and same with the other cap lead......I also put Deans Micro Plug on the cap as well, so this way i can change the cap to a higher or lower capacitance. But then of course its up too you whether or not you want to do it this way....But if your racing its a good idea to do.

Now all you have to do is hook up the Cap......to see if the cap is working just plug in the battery and make sure that the power is off so the cap will charge.....give it a couple of seconds.....Unplug the battery and turn on the esc...you should see the servo move or the esc light up and then go off.....this is to let you know that the cap charged....Now all you have to do is find a place to put the cap....i shoo gooed the cap onto the battery bar......

I only recommend this little mod if your soldering skills is up to par, and if it isnt then please let someone else do it....i would hate for you to fry your esc.....And if this is one mod your unable to do or just dont trust yourself in doing then i will do it for you free of charge...i will provide the caps and wire leads....and i will make sure that the ESC you send me is in good working order....and not a bum one...lol

Forgive my ignorance but by installing a cap what are you gaining from this?

It helps throttle response off the line......(get accelerated that much more Quickly) and using a cap can actually make your esc run that much more efficeintly.....

why would you put your caps on w/ plugs? would ther ebe any reason to switch between bigger capacity caps and smaller ones? does that affect runtimes?

The reason why i used plugs is to only change the capacitance of the cap......lets say if you want to run a cap that has more then what you previously have.....the cap im running now is 6.3volts at 3300mF. Like i said in my first post the more mF the more voltage a cap will hold, and the less micro farads you have the less capacitance. This is totally up to the user, if you want to use a plug or not.....this just gives the user a choice thats all.

If you do install the cap with plugs the way you did, can you run with out any cap at all and not short?

The reason for the plug is so you can take it off if the user wants......it is safe and i have had this setup for years....there are no worries about a short....

Very nice tutorial alfred!

Your lucky to have found a 6.3v cap at RS! All the ones here don't have anything under 16v I think!hehe

I would also say that you can run a smaller uf cap with say a stock motor or even a 300 size motor. Like a 2200uf or so.
