Do batteries go bad?

I bought an AE rc18mt two years ago if not a year ago and the stock battery wont charge anymore...at all. and the reedy mini-max 1100 wont hold a charge for more than 5 minutes. My on/off switch on the truck is kinda screwey too it has to be in the exact right position to run. Im thinking the batteries are bad? Im charging them off a vision peak2. When it stops running it has bad reception or something cus it doesnt like to do what i tell it to. If someone could please help me! Also i havnt run it in like at least 6 months if that does anything. Just noticed something else too. When the car runs fine the red/green light on what i think is called the ecs is bright and when it runs bad its really dim but that also depends on how the on/off switch is sitting, its got some play in it

Good morning and welcome to the site.
In answering your questions: Yes, batteries go bad. Overcharging, heavy cycles, and general age tend to wear them out.
Also, switches can get dirty, or wear out on the contacts. If you can pop the casing loose, try using some alcohol on the contacts to clean them. If that fails, you can get a new switch at your hobby shop (any switch will do).
At worst, you can remove the switch, and solder the 2 loose wires together. Just remember the car will be on as soon as you plug it up.

If you get that problem resolved, it may fix the glitching you're having. If not, get back to us and we'll give it another shot.
Hope this helps.

I went to a local hobby shop and they soldered the wires so it was a stronger connection and that stopped it. Thanks

Yes batts go bad........causes can be overcharging, discharging, and setting up the amperage on the charger too high for quick charging the pack.

You can tell if you are hurting a pack during charging if they smell like chemicals. It means that the charge rate is too high and they are releasing some of the electrolyte as gas. Each time this happens the capacity of the cells decrease. I stick to 1C on NiMH cells as a rule. Some cells specifically state an amperage level less than even that. If you keep releasing the gas the cells will eventually die. You have to store them in a cool dry place also. Heat is a battery's enemy.
