Post Bass Players?

I just started playing bass a couple of weeks ago and am wondering if there are any other bass players on here. I thought it would be cool to have somebody to talk to other than all my guitar playing friends.

Talking

Cool. What kind of music do you play? I play mostly Metallica and System of Down. Just started writing a little bit of song with some friends.

I play bass too!

Welcome to the bass playing world!

I enjoy playing all kinda of things. I mostly just make things up myself though. So what kind of bass did you get?

Later,

Omega

First thing to do is toss the guitar pick away. Unless you are just a frustrated guitarist playing bass.

Learn to play with the fingers right away. Then you can go from plucking to popping and slapping. I played bass travelling the bar scene.

Bass is cool. And when you play with a drummer you click with, it can be the backbone of the band.

I sort of inherited an old Kay but am looking to upgrade, so any suggestions for a cheap ( under $200 ) bass would be cool. I am now playing without a pick because some friends forced me to, but I think I'll keep playing without a pick.

PLaying without a pick is def a better way to go.

As for a somewhat cheap bass to upgrade to. I would look into Ibanez. I play Ibanez now. The first Ibanez bass that I got was an Ibanez GSR 200. Sweet little bass. I think it goes for $205.

Learn to play with three fingers if you can. I really wish I had started out that way. I can now do it with the occasional triplet, but not straight, even, and consistant. And of course it doesn't have near the stamina and strength as the original two.

Also, if you have the tenacity, learn your thoery and sight reading early and continue to use it. I still have trouble trying to pick any of it up, or get rid of bad habits after playing for 14 years without doing any of that...

If you need somewhere to hang out and talk bass, grab yourself an IRC client and come by #bassplayer on efnet.

My buddy thinks I should go try out for Disturbed since they are holding open auditions this weekend in the Chicago area here... but I'm a stubby short chunky dude with no hair anymore. They probably want some pretty boy rockstar with experience. And I'm not exactly a fan, and I don't have all the personal promo material they require for auditioning. I can play their **** with my eyes closed though. And can outslap that old bassist like I was a pimp, and he da ho.
