A little update so far,
  • Chassis 1 is ready for track. Just rebuilt the ball diff and it is very smooth
  • Two Battery packs has arrive: Intellect 1200mAh 2x3 configuration.
  • Chassis 2 has been mostly build up now. Notice that the Exotech chassis is 1-2mm longer than the 150mm configuration. The rear end is a little soft so I will need an upper deck but since there is a length difference, I'll need to make a custom one to stiffen up the chassis. But I'll have an extra tuning feature now (upper deck or no upper deck) to adjust the softness of the chassis to get different grip levels.

I didn't make that one, I bought with it. It is made of fiber glass. I'm trying to make one of similar material and might be a little stiffer. I think my design will be a lot more complex than that but we'll see how much time I have. Maybe I'll take some process pics.

Upper deck done! didn't turn out too bad but I wish I did it on the CAD software (probably would of took as much time to mock up on paper) but I got lazy to turn on that computer. Wish I had a mini CNC then the result would of been even better!

Pictures to follow....

Well here it is.... designing my own upper deck:

The Design
First you'll need the tools of an engineer which consist of pencil, erase, paper, ruler, digital caliper (for precise measurement).

Once you've drew out the design on the paper, it is time to make a photocopy of it for backup incase you screw up the fabrication. Take one of the copy of your design and cut it out. Now you'll need to glue the design onto the material you're going to cut which will be used as a template. The material of you upper deck can be fiber glass, carbon fiber, etc. In my case, I used fiber glass with a copper coat on top to add stiffness compare to pure fiber glass?

Fabrication
Now it is time to cut it out but before that some safety equipment you'll need. Since we're working with composite, you will require safety glasses, breather mask (you do not want to breath in these dust fibers), and gloves. Tools to cut the composite, I used a dremel with cutting disk and also diamond coated carving bits. I would suggest cutting the perimeter of the design first, then drill out the mounting holes to test fit the part before moving on. After all the cutting is is done and that part fits, you'll need a small file to smooth out the edges.

Finally mount it onto the car and it looks something like this:

So here is my chassis #2 with Exotek Generation 1 chassis.

I need new tires or scrub these old tires good.... I had absolutely horrible traction compared to chassis #1. Then again when I tested the chassis 2 on the track, I wasn't running a ball diff. But when I get off the throttle of chassis 1, it will carry way too much speed into the turn compare to chassis 2 which will slow down, is this due to the ball diff?

Looking good man, nice job on the upper deck, if the first one was using a gear diff then you might want to add some thick gear lube.........

First car was running a ball diff which I had a hard time slowing enough for the turns without using brake.

Second car was running gear diff but I had no traction using these old tires (which the first car can use)

the chassis on your car #1 is an ARM pan, best chassis made for a mrs4 IMO.

I had much better luck with an ARM pan, slightly modified, than I had with any other, and I've used them all

cool thanks!
Now my question is why is when I get off throttle the car doesn't like to slow down (cruises a lot) making the car understeer into the turn.

Maybe I should add some toe out to give better turn in and softere front springs.

I would check into the front diff.

I had best luck with a worked over stock gear diff in the rear and a GH one-way bearing front diff, you need HPI steel dogbones up front to run a 1-way diff though.

sanded all the little gears, used dry graphite for lube, and a losi thrust bearing in place of the stock spring in the rr wheel hub.

it was practically frictionless
