If you turn the endbell in the opposite direction as the motor turns you're advancing the timing. This increases RPM and decreases torque.
Horsepower = RPM x torque.
The point is to increase the RPM more than the torque you lose (optimization problem for those who like calculus). After you've advanced the motor past certain point you lose more torque than you gain RPM, so you'll get less power from your motor even if it turns faster.
