In answering your questions: Yes, batteries go bad. Overcharging, heavy cycles, and general age tend to wear them out.
Also, switches can get dirty, or wear out on the contacts. If you can pop the casing loose, try using some alcohol on the contacts to clean them. If that fails, you can get a new switch at your hobby shop (any switch will do).
At worst, you can remove the switch, and solder the 2 loose wires together. Just remember the car will be on as soon as you plug it up.
If you get that problem resolved, it may fix the glitching you're having. If not, get back to us and we'll give it another shot.
