Cleaning bearings???

OK guys another question for ya! I've had to replace a couple of my wheel bearings after tons-o-use. I've just gone ahead and bought new ones but is there anybody out there just cleaning and lubing them. How do you clean them 'cause it doesn't look like its going to be easy to remove the seal?

I do...

I clean and lube my bearings. I prefer to remove the shields(unless they're crimp ons). If you don't want to go through the hassle, I'd recommend getting a RPM Bearing Blaster. Shoot 'em- dry 'em- lube 'em.

since the bearings are shielded, what i do is take some motor spray and a small bottle with a screw on top. Spray some cleaner in the bottle and then drop the bearings in there and close the top to the bottle and just start rattling away. This method i find works well for me. A lot easier just to shake all the grit out of the bearings.

Thanks guys

Thanks guys but how do you re-lube them if they are shielded? Don't most oils just attract dirt even faster? Is there a special lubricant you use?

i use silicon diff grease for the bearings man, works great. Since the bearings are shielded i put lube on the thin groove of the bearing and work the lube in.

you should actually use a light bearing oil (trinity royal oil etc.). any thicker would defeat the purpose of a bearing: free movement. only a little bit so it doesn't attract a lot of dirt.

the diff grease i use is not thick at all, when the grease starts to break down it works just fine. Next time i clean them i will try putting a couple of drops of light bearing oil.

check this out:

http://www.arrowweb.com/bake/blaster.htm

it's a bearing blaster.. it's from RPM so search for the 'RPM Bearing blaster'.. it cleans the bearings nicely, just re-oil them from outside...

works great

cleaning bearings...

Thanks guys. I was considering the RPM bearing blaster until I found out that Integy makes a small battery operated ultrasonic cleaner that I think will work well also. Anyways, I'm going to give it a try.

Well, my LHS couldn't bring it in for me so I think I'll buy a small Ultrasonic cleaner from Ebay. I'll let you know how it goes.

$10, WOW! The Wal-Marts in Canada are a little different. I've never seen one there.

Ultrasonic cleaner........

Well, I bought an Ultrasonic cleaner from Ebay for $38 and I tried it out on a few things last night. Works great....I'm a cyclist so I'm always trying to clean the chains and cassettes on my bikes to make my drivetrain run smoother. Up till now it I had to do this by hand with a brush and citrus cleaner.....and I still couldn't get all the grunge off. I put the chain in the Ultrasonic with some warm water and a little citrus degreaser for about 15minutes and the thing came out spotless. I then drained the dirty water out of it and put the wheel bearings from my M18 in there again with warm water and a drop of degreaser for 5 minutes and voila.... clean bearings. I put the clean bb's on a paper towel to air dry for a couple of hours and then lubed them with a couple of drops of Trinity BB oil. Good as new. I don't think these bearings are of the best quality though as I've gone through quite a few of them already so I'll be looking to upgrade them in the near future. Any Suggestions?
