BRUSHLESS MOTOR reviews for vendetta

this is just my take on things.. not the word of god.. just what i have experienced ,,so take it with a grain of salt.. and with the introduction of the new ST im sure many ppl will want to find a good BL motor to put in there..

testing was at socal raceway a dirt track offroad supercross style track for 10th scale electrics

the buggy is sitting on half8th buggy wheels with proline crime fighter tires
the truggy is sitting on half8th ST wheels with the tires that come stock with it.. kyosho,,3racing

MAMBA 8000kv,, first brushless i tried in the detta
pro- vry fast.. would have been great if it were a 400 can
cons- extreme heat from usage
gearing-12/49

WRAITH 7K,, second brushless once the 8000kv died
pro- just as fast as the 8000kv
cons - another extremely hot motor
gearing -12/49 made it hot but 13/49 made it smokin hot

GH4700,, third motor.. perfect fit,, loved the heat sink
pro,- fast motor not as fast as 8000kv but still fast,, cooled down really fast for the buggy
con- hot.. heat issues,, did not like the half8th ST tires on the vendetta ST
gearing- 19/45 good for buggy bad for truggy even 16/45 was bad extreme heat and not fast at all

AON4900,, fourth motor after gh4700 died,, i thought this was the ticket
pro- fast but not what i thought,, i expected great things from this motor.. it was ok.. prfferred the gh4700 over this one.
con- i idnt expect it to get as hot as it did.. and the claims of it being a torque monster , it just didnt like the gearing
gearing-19/45

GH3600,, tried this motor on the on the buggy and it was decent i was shocked ,,,
pro - decent speed for the buggy and more than decent for the truggy
gearing - 19/41 for both the buggy and truggy

AMMO 28-35-3900,,,, best thing sinced sliced bread.. this is the mamba 8000kv for the truggy,,
pro- really fast.. impressed with its speed ,, i use this motor to race with can work with either quark or mamba
con- gets a lil warmer than i want.. but not anywhere near the heat of the others up top

PERMAX 400/4D,,,, this would be the C4 for the buggy and truggy,, this thing continues to impress me
pro-can be geared for whatever track.. stays cooler than any motor i have used ,, this is extremely awesom
con- price,, and i cant get it to heat up,, works best with quark 33a
gearing -buggy 16/41,,19/45,,1941. truggy 16/41,,19/45(which im scared to try.. dont know what i will break)

EDIT CHANGE AS OF NOW.. 05-07-08,,,,,
MY NEW REFERENCE SYSTEM

NEU 1105/1.5y
19/45 gearing
evo2 1600mah flight power lipo
,,, i cant even describe the feeling.. the power,, the speed..
10th scale street tires with suspension set up for dirt track,,, wheelies on demand.. rlling wheelies.. i have no idea what the top speed is.. the car cant keep up with the tire spin..

Thanks for the write up. This will be extremely helpfull.

I have seen alot of people say that the Hyperion long can 4600 was a good motor. I bought it last year with the Mamba, and it is fast... but I cant run it more than ~8 minutes. It is almost a dead motor now, can opened up due to heat, but I put it back together and it still runs. Although I havent used it since last summer (race Mini-Z). I have a Tekin Rage setup, but will probably use it in a Mini-T BG2 conversion.

I have HPI 1/10 touring car wheels 6mm offset, Tamiya rally block rear tires with Duratrax Street fronts. Sounds like a wierd setup, but for what I run on it is the best tire setup that I have used. I run on torn up asphalt... mainly gravel, but after the line is paved its kindof dusty when you stay on the line... off the line it gets loose. I usually use my Tamiya 1/10 buggy to pave the course after I setup the layout with dots. I dont race offroad competetively, but run with a bunch of friends. Just got a ProPulse for a loaner, think it will be pretty good in that department.

I am going to look around for the Permax or the AMMO motors, those both have the 2.3mm shaft? I dont want to have to search for pinions.

thanks alfred

emu
the permax needs a Quark pro car 33a esc ,,, but gawd dang ,, geared at 16/41 or 19/45 I couldnt get it hot,, rested my finger on it after 20 minutes of running offroad ,,, kept my finger on it for over 15 seconds

the ammo gets hoter but it could also be my set up,,, im using bigger wider tires

both motors have 3.2mm shafts which is great since robinson racing mqkes metric pinions that are made of steel and will last longer than alloy

NICE job on reviewing the motors! Another thing you might want to add is the runtimes for the motors.

One question on the Ammo, though — how can it work with a Mamba-25 if the Ammo surges 45A? Also, do you think this would be a good motor for a LiPo-powered Mini Inferno?
Thanks,
wrxsti02

I couldnt tell you what the runtimes would be,, it all depends on the pack im using and when the pack peaked,,, I have 2 gp1300 cells and 1 2s 1320mah lipo and another 2s lipo that is 1700mah..... every one runs differently,,, but I can tell you they are all over 6 minutes of hard offroad driving,, with a lot of stop and go
also all my motors are toast except for the gh3600 ,, ammo and permax

yes the ammo surges at 45a,,,, and the mamba can handle 50a ,,,, its within the range of the mamba esc

I wouldnt use the ammo in a MI it would best and don right awesome to use the permax with QUARK pro car 33a esc,,,,,,,,,, but only if you can get the final drive near 6:1 ,,,,, so you might have to use a large pinion with a small spur... just do the calculations

THANKS! Didn't know the Mamba-25 could do 50A surge.

I was mainly asking about the Ammo because it's relatively cheap, and I don't want to buy another ESC (I have a Mamba-25). My Mamba motor is starting to get slow, but my ESC is fine, so I was thinking of just getting a new motor to use in my KMI.

I looked on Tower Hobbies, and saw that Permax has another 400/4D with a 2.3mm shaft, for $5 less.

I think I'll just wait now to get another brushless ... I can hold out and wait until the Novak 1/16-1/18 sensored brushless comes out.

now these are 400 size cans.. you cant just drop it in any car and epect great things..

the vendetta and vendetta ST
the mini quake
the mini inferno
and maybe the mini lst

these are the only vehicles i can think of that would benefit.. that is if the gearing can get around 6:1 final drive.. anything higher is a waste of time..

i just ran the AMMO in my buggy with half8th buggy wheels. geared at 19/41 and it was too much for the smaller wheels,, eventhough they are bigger than the stock wheels

you would have to gear the mini inferno at about 6:1 with the ammo and the vendetta with stock wheels need something like 5.5:1 or in the 4"s to 1

Nice review

I have been thinking about picking up a Detta. Nice write-up on the bl motors. I had a Mamba in an X-Ray M18 and I had heat probs with it also.
