Welcome to YourMicro first off!

You can lock the axle diffs in one of two ways. First way is to simply use jb weld on the diff axle gears and have them basically glued together. Make sure the gears fit into the diff housing and everything goes back together cleanly and right.

The 2nd way is easier and reversible. You simply take one of the 3 spider gears off the 3 pointed holder and place the gear you just removed in between the other two gears that are still on the holder. Put the diff back together and there you go locked diff! If you should ever feel the need to unlock it you will just have to put the gear back into it's correct place.

You can use regular Sub-C battery packs. But they will limit where you can mount them because of there size. You can use 2/3a nimh cells like most use for micro's.
Their size makes it easier to mount them.

All though this all depends on what kind of motor you are running? If your going for a crawler I would assume you would be using some kind of Lathe motor so the 2/3a's will work. But if your going for something faster the Sub-C's may be a better choice.
