The battery slot on the receiver is used to provide power the receiver. In the days before the electronic speed controls (ESC) it was necessary to use the 4-cell battery holder plugged into this slot as most vehicles came with mechanical speed controls that were moved by a second servo. When the ESC became more common the battery slot was not used as the ESC provided the 6V power needed by the receiver. Other vehicles like gas and nitro boats as well as sailboats all need a receiver battery pack to power the receiver.

The auxiliary slot on the receiver is used for systems with 3 or more channels. This allows such things as movable rear wings, lights, sirens, etc... to be used and activated by a 3rd channel on the transmitter.
