Battery Advice

I race my truck at a local offroad track in Bithlo Florida, and I have noticed that when I do start to compete with other racers, it does not seem like my battery lasts long enough to finish a race.... I believe I can get a good 3-4 laps... I am running the 7.2V 1400mah battery I purchased from RS when they wen on sale... I am guessing I need another, better, battery to be able to finish a race... I have the DC fast charger I use at the track and the stock ac charger for home... What battery can I get that will last long enough to race with but not call for me to make many modifications to my truck? Can I use my DC fast charger on other batteries? I am new to this so the battery will have to be little to no maintenance.

Really... Never thought of that... I am new to this, where can I get a good peak charger for my batteries? I have the Megatech 7.2V 1200mah and 1400mah batteries. I just assumed the chargers Megatech made were the best for there batteries. I found that Megatech sells a peak charger, but they says its for 4-8 cell batteries. How do I know if that will work for my 7.2V batteries?

You might want to check out chargers that have mv and amperage rates that are adjustable. If you looking for a budget charger then i would check out this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXRST9&P=ML or this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXTSA4&P=ML and another good one as well is also this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCLD5&P=7 and another good tip is that if you store your batts for a long period of time please make sure to cycle your packs.

the duratrax piranha is a reliable workhorse. i personally would get something a little more modern that charges multiple chemistries so you have some room to grow. accucel 6

Ya... I'll look into some of these... Thanks!

I like this Turnigy charger... So will this charger work on these Megatech 6cell 7.2V battery packs already? I would assume this charger would help prolong the life of my batteries as well?

I have this charger. It charges the stock pro-pulse packs no problem

alfred 05-27-2009 07:29 PM

Depends on the settings of the mv and amperage........remember heat is not a good friend to packs.....it causes short life in batts.

AQucsaiJr 05-28-2009 07:02 AM

Heat causes short life? Really? The two chargers I have, The original AC charger and the DC Quick Charger, get the batteries very hot. I have to let them cool down before I place them in the car for use. My car also heats them up pritty good too, but I guess I cant do anything about that though.

alfred 05-28-2009 05:07 PM

Yes it does......it causes premature death in the make up of the cells. Nimh dont like to get too hot and if you say its hot to the touch then you might want to get a new charger with adjustable amperage and mv. And another tip use good batts, one usually gets what they pay for in the end.

What about when I'm at the track? I need a charger that will charge my packs quickly so that I don't miss out on race time. What is a good charger for this?

alfred 05-29-2009 05:52 PM

That is why you need to get more then one pack......usually a race is what 5minutes long with a longer a-main......you can have one charged and ready to go for the next race while the other is charging.

I found a couple I am looking into...

https://fusion-pack.com/productdetai...?id=176&cat=88

I don't know enough about my batteries to know if these chargers would be good for what I have. Like I said before, I am using the MTC73034 1/18 7.2v/1400mAh, and the MTC73045 1/18 7.2v/1200mAh from Megatech. Could someone tell me if these chargers would work and possibly recommend one to me?

alfred 02-05-2010 09:10 AM

They both will get the job done, but also with both you will need a psu to get the charger going. What other batt packs do you have since these will also charge an array of batts.

AQucsaiJr 02-05-2010 09:14 AM

I don't have any other type of battery packs yet. I want to get a couple Lipo packs when I upgrade to the brushless motor but that wont be for a while.

You lost me... What is a psu? Like I said, I am new to this level of RC.
