Intelligentsia

Hey guys,

Just want to see if we can agree on August 9 as a date for the next SoCal micro meet?

Hitec is on August 2nd and I know that a lot of us will be there. How does August 9 sound to you all?

BLiND
07-13-2003, 10:25 PM
I broke my chassis today!

I'll be good to go on the 9th I think though.

uhm, anybody got a spare penguin pan they would donate to let me break? lol...

ouch...

I still won the micro main up here, 18 laps in 4 minutes, lapped the 2nd place car.

I sold a few rabid chiwauwau motors though, I fear they're going to catch me next week :D

ALapDown

The 9th is better for me. I can't make it on the 2nd.

Hey Intel, does that mean that you're gonna give SoCal another try?

Intelligentsia
07-14-2003, 03:40 PM
Depends on how the car runs there. I will give it a shot though.

Will you be at Hitec Sumschmoe?

I'm still pondering on whether to replace my penguin's busted pan with another 3500LM pan, a 3500 narrow, or just switch back to an ARM and wait for the EXO2...

You'll like the Chihuahua dhindo. That motor was 2nd at Hobby People on 3/30, 3rd at So Cal on 5/3 TQ'ed and won at HP on 6/8 and was 2nd at So Cal on 7/12...I know the driver and it was all in the motor! :D

Micro Moose
07-16-2003, 09:35 AM
If you can't win with a Chihuahua you better look for another excuse. I believe 5 of the 8 racers at Socal on 7/12 where using the Rabid Chihuahua motors. If some weren't running them it was because they just bought them and didn't get time to install them. It would have been 6 of 9 if I had run modified instead of stock that night.

Micro Moose
07-17-2003, 11:34 AM
I was running the bright Green and White stratus in stock. Jeff Crane was running my darker green and white body with the moose on the hood because it had a transponder mount hole. I ran in stock to help fill out the field.

If anyone wants to see the results from 7/12 and didn't know, they are up at www.socalrc.com under the results tab. The reason the stock class is so fast is we shortened the layout for that class only.

So are we (those that can make it)
going to run a Box-stock class and
the Open Mod class?

Remember we need at least 5 for the Box-Stock.

And I for one hope we do.
I'd like my son to race again.

The Fair? Hawaii?
Come on guys where are your priorities?! :p

On a beach looking at girls in bikinis...when the wife isn't looking that is!

Box Stock Class. How's the feeling out there for a little more speed and instead calling it "Stock" or "Spec"? I'm thinking with all that space out there 5 and a HPI mod motor might be close. Micro Choady, how do you think your boy would handle a few more ponies...assuming you get that chassis fixed!

MicroChoady
07-22-2003, 05:27 PM
I think he would break pieces just as fast as he does
when it comes out of the box.

I can do 5 cells with the HPI Mod motor if everyone else wants to.
Or should I say, my son can!

ALapDown
07-22-2003, 05:42 PM
Did he break the car, or did some brute 10th scale car do it?:D

I think we'll get a little more draw with a touch more speed. Not rediculous speed, we got that end covered already, but a bit more to make you use the throttle a little. Box Stock was fun too though, you really had to mind your driving line.

I'll have both my cars there (stock & mod) plus my 10th scale. I'll only run 2 of the 3 max. Personally I have a much better chance at a top 3 finish in stock class. Maybe if Brain Kinwald was to show up with a stock micro I might get scared but otherwise I'll take you all in stock.

pfft, come on up to camarillo, see what happens on my local track ;)

BTW - if anyone cares, we're racing regularly on the 2nd and 4th sundays of each month with an "open" micro class, races start around 10-11:00am and run until like 6pm depending on how slow the race director is that day. We have 10 micro's in our class, and each race day more show up!

The limit we've set is big blocks/370's and 7 cells. I wanted 8 cells but others couldn't be convinced...

Signups close at 5:15 PM Racing starts at 6:00. People will be showing up mostly between 4:00 and 5:00. Some people try and get there early (2 or 3) and get some extra practice in.

Practice with a Micro is a little dicy especially if you're a real novice running stock. The big car drivers don't seem to see us too well and in a crash, we lose. I run most of my practice laps with my 10th scale to get the feel of the layout and only run a couple with my micro to make sure its running right. The fast Mircos can run with the big boys without too much trouble though so its up to you.

SoCal doesn't carry any parts for the Micros so you'll need to be prepared. If you break, you might find another driver you can supply you (ie Blind) but don't count on it.

Torrance is just up the road from Huntington Beach.

Just hop on the 405 FWY South,
When you get into OC,
Exit on Brookhurst south,
About 1 mile down, on the leftside of the street,
you will see a PepBoys.
SoCal is right behind it.

(if my directions are confusing,
check out their webpage.)

Go a little early if you can.
Pit space maybe a premium.

Good Luck!

I hope that new motor you're trying on the BRP will be fast enough, we've decided to use 7 cells up here because of the track size.

Orion soft rears and TRC magenta's up front. You can use TRC orange up front, but I have found that combo to push like crazy. Forgot who was asking, but this works for me.

BLiND
08-05-2003, 03:35 PM
well you're running an exo ALD, my penguin has less rear traction than the exo does.

remember you drove my car for like half a lap last time? That was team orion soft rears with TRC magenta fronts, and it hooked like a mother, with the dual rate set to 50%

I switched to rubbers up front and the car started to behave itself, lol.

of course. AMB personal system, and the larger self powered transponders that the track provides. If you need a transponder the track will charge an extra $5 over the race fee's for them. That adds up to $15 to enter the race.

AMD personal transponders cost like $60 to buy

Hi i got to so cal rc raceway almost every week. I own a micro but b4 i come down can u guys give me a basic rundown on which setup is good in open mod such as motor tires and batteries?

Thanks

kevin

hopefully I can come down some time and get whipped by all of u.

motor:
watt-age 370, speed 300, big block, etc etc etc

batteries:
6cell 2/3a or brick

tires:
foams, soft rear, medium or hard front

chassis:
pan

Intelligentsia

Motors, I would say united RC's Krystal-3 it sounds like a great motor. A good set of batteries I would have to say ProMatch or the KAN cells. As far as tires either Team Orion soft rear foam tires or TRC Pink rear foams. As far as fronts, you can either run Team Orion firm, TRC Magenta or even rubber tires if you feel that the foams are too twitchy.

The proper setup will also depend upon your car. Do you have a pan chassis?

Me and my brother each have a micro and will come down to race some time. I have the ipd chassis and my brother has the arm chassis. Is the united motor just a fine tuned speed 300? How do u guys keep the stock micro wheels from pushing in more. Also how do u keep them from breaking. Do u guys use the team epic mod? Sorry for all the questions but I want to be ready when I come down there to run.

also where do u get the KAN cells? I saw that united had them but dont see them anymore...

Kevin

Intelligentsia

The Krystal-3 motor is based on the speed 300 platform but is tuned for performance. The can is polished so that is very shiny, the bushings are polished, the bushings are lubed, the brushes are broken in, the shaft is filed and the motor is tuned.

Just a fine tuned 300? All of those modifications will make a huge difference in both performance and aesthetics.
There is not currently any other company modifying these motors to this extent. The end result is an extremely fast, smooth motor.

The KAN cells should be in stock shortly just send them an e-mail. Those cells are very good! They may be the best cells currently on the market for the micro.

To keep the wheels from pushing in, I use some cut zip ties. Once the wheels crack, I glue them onto the hubs.

Send me an e-mail with your address and I can send you some. You will need two on each rear tire for the widest setting and one for each of the front tires.

Emaxxer and Others.

Come on down and run. We have all sorts of racers running Micro. We go from myself and others that are Novice drivers in 10th scale sedans up to 3 or 4 Pro Drivers that have run with us on occasions.

If we have enough people we will run a box stock class using the 4 cell stock battery holder and stock motor. The other class is "open" with no real rules. The "standard" open class car is running 6 cells and some brand of modified or big block motor. These get going fast enough that speed isn't the problem but handling the speed is.

We'd like to find a easy (cheap) way to speed up the stock cars a little but for now its stock or open.

If you make it down look for me. I'll be the one with the Moose antenna ball above my pit box.

That is great that you polish the bushings!

Who is arguing?

I wasn't being condescending in my previous post if that was in fact your perception.

As far as opening up the motors, I have opened up every single 300 motor that I have purchased because there are always little things about them that are not right.

I liked your motor. The powerband was very linear and smooth.

By the way Henry when will you be racing again? I know that you have been busy lately.

can i run 7 cells? i know it will be hard to control but i ordered them already because i THOUGHT* i read the limit was pushed to 7cells :(

but i can always take it off if you guys make it 6 cells , just wondering :)

MicroChoady
08-08-2003, 01:49 PM
I don't recall anyone running 7 cells.

I would ask that you run 6 though.
Makes it more fair for everyone.

I believe some people run 7 cells at a track
further north.

That is just my $.02 :D
It's not my track, I just race there.

camarillo is where we run 7 cells, the track is almost double the size of socal, so its more suited to the extra speed.

Intelligentsia
08-08-2003, 04:27 PM
Why not equalize the weight distribution and run eight?

I am down for eight. You should make it an eight cell limit. Lets bring out the 280 BB's!!

BLiND
08-08-2003, 04:29 PM
yea 8 cell 280bb's would be nice :D

we decided on the 7 just because of the general setup of everybodies cars, a lot of them have crappy speed controllers that are limited to 7 cells. One guy made an 8 cell AAA battery pack and his car would shut down towards the end of the race, his crappy hpi micro control was overheating, lol

dvessel
08-08-2003, 04:34 PM
Too bad the 280bb isn't all that fast. I used one on 8 cells and it's not much faster than a 300. Handles the power better so maybe with 9-10 cells.. ;)

You guys are so lucky to have all those races going on. :( I'll be at the parking lot.

Intelligentsia
08-08-2003, 05:07 PM
If you guys move up to eight cells I will race my micro there.

I will be up there for Hobby People so will these people be running seven cells? I am guessing that the BRP on six should be pretty close to a micro on 7.

BLiND
08-08-2003, 05:08 PM
we arent sure yet, my friend who works at the local HP will be running tech, so I think we'll be safe with 7 cells. He'll be racing with us, I believe he wants to use 8 cells also.

I'll talk to the guys on sunday to see what they think about going 8 cells

Intelligentsia
08-08-2003, 05:14 PM

Well it was a heck of a night. Two micro heats. I broke my "mod" car in practice, went to a stock chassis with a mod motor for the races. I could barely keep it on the track. Spun my pinion in the main. So we just ran for the hell of it. Still I got 2nd in 10th scale though so it wasnt a bad night. Sorry, Schmoe, I didn't read you post till now so I didn't bring my camera.

We moved from first Saturday to accomondate several racers. none of those racers showed up tonight. So lets try and keep it simple. 1st Saturday or bust.

We really need to make some rules about what is "stock" and whats "open". The best suggestion I've heard is we run "4 cells" and "6 cells". Its difficult to make rules when we aren't the track owners though. We need to work with Slim and Jim on this. I'll talk to them about making some rules but for now its really up to us.

I had posted some poles on stock, mod, and "outlaw class". Maybe you'd like to try them out at your hobby.

Stock consensus was (39 votes total for the pole)

2wd and 4wd same category.
5 cells
chassis and drive train mods accepted
180 motor

Mod was:
300 motor
6 cells basically
chassis and drive train mods accepted

Outlaw/ Unlimited class:
anything goes: BL, 540's, 400's
No limit to cells, chassis etc.

Just an idea, I'm going to try to do the same at my local races, see if we can get some common rules throughout the nation on micro racing.

It was my first time there and it was fun...unfortunately I got there too late to sign up for the races (wifey...:() anyway... I went out for some practice laps with my 5Zigen EXO with a 280BB and it was pretty cool and plenty fast...but now that I have a new Chihuahua (Thanks Moose)I can't wait until next time...the track was great and everybody seemed really nice..

Unfortunately they let 1/10 scale cars out on the track at the same time and I got t-boned and my front knuckle broke...next time alloy...:)... the back of my car was a little loose but after a few laps I got the hang of it...(time for a tire change)

I have to paint up one of my 15+ unpainted bodies so that I can use it to bash/race with so I don't beat up my show cars :)

sigh i wasn't gonna post cuz im too embarrased to :o

well someone kept my radio frequency and thought it would be cool to do that, so at 5:50 i got one practice lap :D and i put down my micro and this 1/10 just slams it from the back, micro flew at least 30 ft, all the way to the end of the track, i was like NOOOOOOOOO, so i get it to the pit, and fix some minor stuff, and put it back down, go up to the drivers stand and get a practice lap, or more like flying lap, i was all oVER The place, i dunno why but my micro kept on FLIPPING =\ i had TO hard frotn, and soft back =\ =\ =\ anyways ennough of that, so i get all ready, and figures that my brothers 2 channel reciever wont work with teh trasnponder because it doesn't haev a 3rd channel, i go get a y harness and plug it in, and my reciever smokes cuz i plugeed it in the wrong way, but fortunately it works agian!

----------------------race bell rings---------------

so im all ready to race, go up to the stands, and it figures im in the stock class :p i was like hmmm i have a sepeed 300 and 6 cells and so does my brother, so i was like "kevin lets own!"

hmmm so right when race starts my brother has interference problems and cant control his car for the rest of the race :P

i do OK, for the 1st lap then someone bammed me or did i bam him? lol and i lost my front doggy,

in other words we got owned by the stock cars HAHAHAHA, anwyays, i had an 8th pinon and speed 300 so i had a lot of torque but not speed, maybe 12 or 13 tooth nextime

back to the pits ;)

------------------marshall--------------

didn't know i was suppose to do marshall but this guy told me(again i dont know his name but ratzas chassis, green hpi springs, and blue esc blue rx and stuff ) so i do the marshall, really enjoyed doing it :D
'

-----------------packing up-----------

i pack up i thoguht there was only 1 heat, so i go return the trasnponder and the owner says why are you leaving so early? theres another heat!

so i go back to wrenching and thanks to this guy(i dont know his name but he had a ratzas cahssis and a red solvia(?) body, and hpi green springs :P and custom made batts) yea anyways that guy spots me a stock dog bone so i go work on my micro, all fixed, and WHILE he was fixing my car he told me he got shocked and i was like , hmmm, later on it figures someHOW my batter yshorted and it was shocking the whole cahssis or wutever, lol and the battery's green shrink wrap melted and it was a mess =]

time to help my brother, we figured it was a reciever problem, but dind't have a spare rx on hand, so we go for the 2nd heat anyways

------------------2nd heat starts---------------

so yea we get there, and race starts, i was doing great =] this was the 2nd time on the track so it was getting better, but still kept on spinning out, half way done, doggy breaks again =[

my brother on the other hand, got glitching problems again and decided to quit the race :( oh well, he had fun though lol

---------------------packing up----------------

i packed up because my friend was getting bored and he had to go home,

thats my story, anyways, i thought it was fun, but i wasn't prepared and i sucked lol

it was mucho fun, i met moose too ;) i didn't know MOOSE sold the rabies, ill have to get into buying one, =]

i SPIN out and the car on the right TENDS TO SKIP or FLIP when i turn hard, any ideas why? could it be that when i turn all the way the wheel touches the sway bar? any ideas?

i run TO hard front TO soft back =[

and ball diff, one way, both HPI

and the car on the right has no springs on, the sway bar ACTS as a spring, maybe puts some springs on?

AND since i had so many glitching problems i thought it was the ALUMINUM antannae mount slicing my wire, so i chagned to the lexan type, the one where you wrap your wire AROUDN the lexan, do you think my antannae setup is ok for socal? or is it too small and stuff and make the glitching problem WORse?

Micro Choady is the one selling motors. He was pitted across from me. But his supply for last night was spoken for.

A far as the antenna. I run the titanium antenna so I don't need a marshall as often. I used to think I was glitching alot but then I switch to the double link steering and the car quit switching directions... We think the stock steering link can't handle the loads at speed. If it was really a glitch problem hopefully it will be better next time.

BLiND
08-10-2003, 08:32 PM
hey xazn, you seriously need to redo your antenna leads.

get a titanium antenna kit, or a normal antenna tube for each car and get that wire so you have some exposed out of the body and away from all that dang metal.

also, to fix your handling problems, put the stiffest springs youve got on the front end, and since the hard foams werent working for you, switch to medium compound hpi rubbers, but leave the soft rear foams.

anyways, i have a titanium steering link with ball cups, i made em myself :D yes and im proud of them lol

yae i just tested the cars out and MAN THAT new antannae with lexan wont go furter than 10 feet, took it out and i came up with a new solution, wrap the wire around the tube =]

Wow what a night is right.
SoCal bit my car hard on Saturday.
1st heat, broken flex plate,
2nd heat, broken flex plate,
A-main, hingepin on left side of front end
slipped out and caused shock to lose spring,
and suspension stays in up position.
Right turns were just about out of the question.

I guess all those trouble free races finally caught up to me.
Very frustrating. especially since I had about a half lap lead
on everyone for the first lap or two.

But the crew from VIP were having a great night.
They would capitalize on my misfortune and then
they would blast to the finish.
Great job guys!

It's always great to see new compition come out and race.
They all raced well together.

it was still a great time, even with my bad luck and
the high indoor temperature!
