Actually the 20th is a Wednesday. I doubt I could ever make it on a weekend day since that is the busy time in my store.
On a side note, we are designing out own micro track and will
start construction as soon as a location is found. Cool design with mostly padded rails! If no location is found indoors we will have to wait until spring and build it in the parking lot next to my house.

If you wanna find out about the Cleveland race got to Trinity's web site. teamtrinity and the other stuff. There's a link on the front page of there site. It's full though. No more entries.
If your commimg up to Ultra, don't come until Dec. 4th. There racing oval and closed for Turkey day until then.
I am still gonna try to get down on the 4th.
A question to anyone who has raced there. Do they run the race on the oval or road course? What is the track like?
Oh and what freqs does everyone run? I need to order a spare set of crystals cause 62 is the only ones I have right now.

We race 4 cell mod. 8 min. races. Roadcourse. Most are running Big Blocks w/4AA's, 12 or 13 pinion. Stk front tires, soft rears. Freq.'s are all over the map, better get a 2nd set.

Are 4 cells the max allowed? I've been building these Micros, just never had them on the track in comp. yet.
hobbyman_7
11-14-2002, 12:22 AM
Yeah. 4 cells max. any kind except lithiom. 4cells+bigblock=fast on a carpet track. If your an experienced racer 5 or 6, but thats really on the edge of control.
Well I am glad I asked, means I will have to build a 4 cell pack.
On 4 cells should a HPI mod or TO Elite motor have the better speed? The RPM per volt is higher on them than the BB/Speed300 I think.
Oh well, motors are a quick change. At least I have an idea how to start setting the car up.

I just ordered some 4 cell brick packs from Blind. Should be interesting....
James
RTolle
11-14-2002, 12:58 AM
6 cells although a lot of fun for the experienced racer is too much power to make use of. I found myself having to turn down the throttle speeds on my radio to make the car easier to drive and my lap times only droped by about half a second going from 4 to 6 cells.
I would consider the track to have fairly good bite and forgiving to drive with a micro but a sedan or 1/12th scale will keep you on edge.
MicroJunke
11-14-2002, 01:01 AM
I'm very inexperienced on the track... so I'm sure 4 cells will be more than enough for me....

If Toledo is closer for anyone, there are races every Sunday there which is better for some people since it is on the weekend. They only require 5 to make up a class. So far there are a few of us that will be showing up with micros.
If we can get more people we can start racing in a 1/18th scale class, I think entry is $10 and it's at HobbyStop Raceway, if anyone would like directions go here - http://www.chemistry.ohio-state.edu/~mlufaso/rc/raceloc.html or let me know via this thread or through email - webmaster@iwpro.com.
I live in Ann Arbor Mi so it is about 30-45 minute drive for me. Would be nice to get more support for the micros going and have some real races. So far I have only just fooled around on that track.

~ James
hobbyman_7

Yea, they have most stock parts and a lot of TO and HPI hopup parts, although hard to see, they are behind the counter.
A friend and I plan to be at Ultra on the 4th. Not sure if he will race or not but I plan to.
After building 4 cell saddle packs for my car and relearning to drive it with 2 less cells, I hope to be ready to race. Not sure if I will have a big block in or not so I might have to struggle by with my HPI mod. Which on 4 cells can beat a stock motor with 6 cells.
Everyone can laugh at my silly 150mm RX-7. :)
Also Blake are you going to make it on the 4th? I have a body I might have you paint.
RTolle
11-24-2002, 10:38 PM
If you were running a 6-cell hpi mod that's about equal to the big block with 4-cell so you may not have to change your driving as much as you think. If you need a big block Ultra should have some in stock but you may want to give them a call.

Know that I'm not in school on sunday's I am going to try to start running also but it will be hit and miss. I do plan on going this sunday but I'll keep you posted.
Racing went well tonight. those that came down seemed to enjoy themselves despite the fact that they didn't get all the bugs sorted out untill the mains.
I was surprised that Dave and Chuck ran. For those that didn't know Dave went undefeited last season at Ultra but hasn't been having any luck lately. Chuck always races but it's rare for him to put down the 12th scale and pick up his micro not to mention this is the best he's ever run in micro. Hobbyman, I don't know where you came from but geez you got fast quick and your making me scared I'll start losing on a regular basis.
My setup is:
1.No chassis cutouts
2.No rear shock
3.stock front springs
4.rear gear diff set very free
5.front one-way
6.orange trc front tires/double purple rear tires
7.big block
8.upper deck is optional (i use a custom battery mount and no upper deck)
9.widest tire settings
10.ARM chassis
Notes: I use paragon to dope all the rear tires and half the front as a starting point and vary the amount on front for the track and driving style.

It was a blast and everyone was very nice.
Well my first trip to Ultra is over! I really don't know how to describe the experience. I learned more in 4 hours there than I have learned in the months since I got my micro. My car is also now very familar with every inch of every board there, at least I think I hit every one.
Most of all I want to thank Ryan for his help and advice. I did not realize what a micro noob I was until I saw him run.
I have started fixing the damage and will be back! Hopefully I will learn to drive and get to run with the big dogs instead of having a bash class made just for me! Oh well, at least I did not hear anyone laugh directly at me.

Yep, got to watch those yellow rails. They kept jumping in front of me all night. Luckly shoegoo will repair cracked bodies.
I am building a small practice track in the back room of my store (not a hobby shop!) and plan to practice every day til I can dodge the yellow rails with ease. Using foam tubes to pad the turns, might just have to bring foam padding to Ultra!
As far as racing at Ultra, now is a bad time of year, too much going on and babysitters are too hard to find. I hope to make it down one or twice more this year, but plan to make it at least once, if not twice a week after first of the year.

Blake
RTolle
12-10-2002, 12:55 PM
The rules are pretty simple. There are 2 classes stock and mod. The only difference is the motor allowed. The only limitation is that you must run a 4-cell battery and a stock motor for the stock class or any mod motor for the mod class such as the big block/speed 300. All other items are open like chassis, tire, body, etc...

Sunday practice opens at 10am and racing starts at noon.
I really like my 1700 energizer packs and Hobbyman and chuck really like the 1850 digitals. Best Buy carries the energizers. I know when I come off the track with 1700's I have 530 something seconds left at a 5 amp discharge which is pretty good considering the race is only 480 seconds long. I can only imagine the time left on the digitals.
I'm not a huge fan of futaba b/c they aren't comfortable to me. They are both excellent radio's however, especially for the micro or just about anything else for that matter.

Although you don't know them, Eli and Lafasso ran mod sedan and put on a heck of a show. Those 7 turn mods are absolutely ballistic. Not to mention Jr's 12th scale performance. Undiefieted on the day and setting a higher track record in 3 out of the 4 races.

I found some pics of the BRP pro chassis. It looked really cheasy with the blue fiberglass everywhere but it's supposed to come out as a graphite version. The other problem is it's only being sold as a aftermarket upgrade and not a full kit. They also have it set up to run the 2/3A cells.

The pics on that thread were just posted and are of the full graphite version. It looks pretty sweet tricked out in graphite. I just may have to give it a shot. The only thing it needs are the front hubs and rear axle and motor by the looks of it. Which is ok because I'd replace their stock solid axle for a diff and the front hubs and axles are cheap. It is also set up more like the CRC rear pod than any of the others I've seen.

How right you are. But a 12th scale is always faster than a sedan with the same driver.
hobbyman_7
12-20-2002, 12:35 AM
Yea - it'll be like a 1/12th scale car racin a sedan, 1/12 scale will win. The Micro 4wd will have to much drag to keep up with the BRP, that's obvious. Should be seperate classes, just like 1/12th and sedan.
hobbyman_7
12-20-2002, 12:38 AM
Might be fun to play with, but if you think we're scarin off the competition now that'll really do it.
RTolle
12-20-2002, 12:50 AM
After looking it over it doesn't seem to be very incomplete. I think it comes with the rear motor mounts for a big block so the total price on the car would be about equal to the micro but you also get all that cool carbon fiber stuff and a car that doesn't need any hop-ups so it may be easier to get people into it.
Besides, I'm gonna run a 43 lapper if it's the last thing I do.:D Just to reclaim my throne atop the 1/18th standings after Mike killed me last sunday throughout the qualifiers.

ARM has their new Audi R-8 for sale now. It's on their website. I can't say it's the greatest body out in fact I like the others more.
Does anyone plan to race on Sunday?
Hobbyman-
Myself, Mike and Ed have been on Ultra's forums talking about ways to get more people into micro's. It'd be great if you could give us your opinions on the matter. Ed has brought up some issues that I hadn't thought of and makes a good point. As scary as it may sound, going back to running stock along with our current mod class may be a very good idea that could make it easier for newcomers to start running.
hobbyman_7
12-26-2002, 12:13 AM
RTolle - the ARM Audi R8 body looks like it was trimmed to high, needs to be lowered and I think it'll look good. Yea I've been following the discussion on the Ultra boards, for some reason I can't get registared there. I agree with Mike and Ed, the way to get more racers is to go slower(less money to start) not faster. I'd be more than willing to run stock or 45 turn and our Mod. class to get more people racing Micro's. As far as racing this Sunday, I don't know yet for sure, but sounds good.
RTolle
12-26-2002, 12:24 AM
So when do you want to start running stock again? Maybe either this sunday if you can make it or the next wed. that we race. It may be the perfect class for that ipd car of yours. I'm surprised that board won't let you register.
hobbyman_7

12-26-2002, 09:45 PM
Have you gotten your epic together yet, Hobbyman?
I was thinking about it and if we want to run a stock class maybe we should talk to Ed about selling a spec type 4-cell battery. The 2/3A cells would work great for either stock or 45 turn since they don't have the runtime of the AA's.

12-29-2002, 10:34 PM
I run Energizer 1700's but I'm the exception. Everyone else likes the Digital 1800's. Either or will give you plenty of run time, for example my brand new Energizer pack had just over 600 seconds of run time left at a 5 amp discharge and that means I could run 2 8 minute races on the same pack. As a side note we run 4-cell AA's.
We had some good racing action today. Dave finally got his car figured out and should be a force to contend with this coming wed night. I couldn't better the track record although I was close several times today. Hobbyman you've got to check out Dave's new radio it's so much nicer than his old one it's not even funny.

Hobbyman, Dave tried an elite coreless today and it was slow, I can't even imagine what stock will be like again. I'll run stock and mod at the new years day race if enough people show to run both.
hobbyman_7
12-29-2002, 11:46 PM

The new Ratzas chassis is out. Can't tell what sort of rear end design he's got going but I bet it's like the Pro pan that Dave has. As a plus it's all in pretty blue and not purple.

I'll be there with my stock and mod. I'm use to 6 minute heats and am worried that my 1100 Nimh won't cut 8 minutes. I use to run my NiCd 600 2/3s for 6 minutes with about 20 seconds to spare. I'll try to put together a pack of 1600 AA but they' won't fit too well in my EXO. Anyone use 2/3 A cells? Which ones if you do?
Are most of the guys running the 150 wb? What bodies do most of you race?

RTolle - I'll have to see if can dig up my other stock motor plate, found one yesterday. If it's just gonna be me and you in stock I'd rather not run both though.
oskio - no one running 2/3a's that I know of now. We did have one guy race one week and he used them, but he was running the 1100mah purple cell's. Yes most people are running the 150wb with the Vette being popular. A number of ARM bodies also.
RTolle
12-30-2002, 11:23 PM
Oskio, Where do you normally race that you run 6 minutes? You should be able to make time on the 2/3A cell's as long as there the 1100mah.
Most of us run the 150mm wheelbase b/c it's more stable and handles better with the big block. Just so you know the big blocks/speed 300 motors are legal at our track in the mod class. I currently run the corvette body but the ARM bodies are very popular and if Ultra carried them I too would have one.
I'm interested to see the epic run. Hobbyman has one but it's not together yet and no one else has been good enough for us to see what it is really capable of.
It'll be nice to have a new track layout for new year's so no one has homecourt advantage. Promises to be interesting especially between myself and Mike. Oskio, hopefully you can help mix things up a bit.

Don't get your hopes up :) I haven't run my micro out of my livingroom for about 6 months (my wife had our first child + I got into RC planes). I raced over the summer at CORCAR in Columbus and prior to that we had a track setup last winter at my wife's school. About 6 or 8 guys every Saturday. We all ran 6 or 7 cells and mod motors for 6 minute heats.
I've just spent a few hours reconfiguring my EXO chassis to hold AAs without loosing the ability to run 2/3s. I have the purples Hecells too. I'll try those and see if I'm still rolling after 7:59...:)
I think I know the guy you're talking about, were driving down together Wednesday. He'll be racing his TC3 though, gave up the Micro and went back to 10th...:(

I also fly. I've got a Dazzler but haven't flown since I snapped the main wing on my Giles about a year and a half ago. It's mainly b/c I normally went with my brother and a friend who fly heli's and the field we flew at outlawed the helicopters.

I see the micro racing has taken off in Ohio! I am nothing more than a thirty something rc nut that has been granted permission from his wife and 30 month old baby girl. I would like to join you all in Hamilton on Wednesday nights to learn how to race my micro. Could someone please give me some info on chasis options. I have been wanting one of those trick pan chasis for a while now. Or maybe its time to step up and build an all out racer. What are the track rules?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated and I will buy the pizza the night I finally get to race and meet you all.

Glad to hear your going to come join us in the future. Track rules are pretty simple it's 4-cell stock or mod depending on the class. At the moment there are 2 chassis that have been proven to work well without modifications. One being the ARM and the other the penquin 3500lm. The ratzas pro pan also works after you modify the rear pod design. The all out racer you mention is far less involved than you may think. The biggest improvements are made in going to a pan chassis, freeing up the drivetrain and finally a motor. Most of the fancy aluminum hardware is a waste of money except for the aluminum front diff housing and possibly the front hubs.
Dave, your name sounds very familiar to me. Did you used to own a hpi mini and run down at AK Hobby about 3 or 4 years ago?

The only things I would add to RTolle 's suggestions would be a front one-way. I would also recommend AA batteries over 2/3a cells as we run 8-minutes and the 2/3a's lose there zip about halfway thru a race. Good brands are Energizer 1700mah, Ray-o-vac 17 or 1800mah or Digital 1800mah. They have plenty of run time and lots of punch.:D

Can we run BRPs with the micros at Ultra?
The columbus racers have a thing or two to learn from you guys. Of course we run outside and 6 cells...:)

Thanks for the advice and quick response:
RTolle, I wasn't running rc cars back then so it probably wasnt me. I use to race indoor electric trucks. Losi XXT. That was almost ten years ago, however.
Where is the best place to purchase the batteries?
I thinks I'll build a stocker and a modified that should keep me busy.
Last question: how to you get one of those cool little pictures by your name on the forum?
Thanks

One more quick question, Is anyone running a brushless setup in the modified class?

Anyone heading up to Ultra this Sunday? I've got my stocker in shape enough(crossing-fingers) to practice abit. Hopefully, I can race in the afternoon as well.
now if I could just get this wireless network to work... lol

DLHughes - Beat place to buy batteries? - good ole Walmart! Running brushless? - no one - to expensive. Cute little pictures? - there called avatars, look up at the top of the page under user cp.
oskio - BRP's?, Ed(owner of Ultra) says they are OK to run, but we've been trying to keep just Micro RS4's.
Yep, Look at this mess I started!
Well, after the multiple crashes I had the last night I raced, I have rebuilt and am ready to race. I replaced everything that broke with aluminum including a new GH front oneway II. One thing I must note about the new oneway - with it, alum dogbones and alum knuckles my frontend is very tight and smooth. I hope this will help with my control problem and cut down on my eating the boards.
I also bought a set of aluminum rims, but don't know if I am going to run them or not. They look too nice to tear up.

Microjunke-Ultra isn't open again until monday.
DLHughes-I must have been thinking of a different dave. You really don't need to seperate cars to run stock and mod. We run the same setup's in mod as we do in stock and it only takes a minute or two to swap motors.
Oskio-We'll have to make a trip up to columbus through the summer. I've always wanted to run the micro on pavement and maybe you can teach us a thing or two.
Hobbyman-I just got my one toyota body done. It's pretty sweet looking. I believe it's good for at least another lap or two. I attached a pic of it but it's not the greatest.

RTolle - Toyota body looks good. Your right it propably will add a lap or 2.
Nerg - I'm interested to see your GH one-way II - sounds like you have a bullit proof front end now!:D

I've heard some guys are trying to buy an AMB system and start carpet racing Micros somewhere in Columbus. I'll let you guys know if they do. I'll tell you now though they'll run 6 cells...:)
Keep checking www.corcar.com for updates on the 2003 schedule. They have a good forum as well. I'll try to set something up with you guys to come up for a Sunday race.
thanks,

Oskio- the corcar site is down. Do you have any word on when it will be working again? Also six cell isn't a problem, I've been wanting to run it for some time now but no one else wants to. I think I may do some testing out behind Ultra in the summer on their asphalt track. It's roughly 100 by 40 and should give me some idea on an asphalt setup. Since I'll have enough gear for that layout it should be a very good reference.
You'll have to let us know about the possible carpet track.
Hobbyman-I've been working on the micro. I had the chassis off and drilled a bunch of holes on the sides to lighten it up. Don't think it really did anything but with the foams I'm going to order tomorrow along with a new motor and the toyota body, I hope to give Mike a run.
Nerg- the only thing that can decrease the amount of time spent meeting the boards is practice. I've been running weekly for at least six years and Hobbyman was an owner of Right Choice for about 10 years before I even started. Chuck, Dave, Mike, Hobbyman and myself have been envolved in R/C a long time and paid our dues. Now it's your turn.

Hobbyman - I found the TRC part #'s for double purple rears and orange fronts. I was going to give ultra a call tomorrow and see if I can have them for wed. If you want some I'll have them order you a pair too when I call.

Hobbyman- there ordering the tires but aren't going to order untill wed. morning.
Ok, getting ready for Wednesday here and need help with set-up. Ryan, are you running stock, mod or both? I need to figure out which motor to put on and what pinion gear to use. I don't think I want to try to run both stock and mod this week, maybe after I get use to the new track layout.
I am gonna try to go early Wednesday and get in some practice.

Nerg, great questions that I need answers to as well. Currently, I have my stock setup ready to go. My plan is to run with the Elite (so I can make it around without hitting anything, hopefully) so switching out will be easy. Same question, what pinions for Stock and Mod?
I may just run stock as well until I get the hang of things. Hopefully, I'll see you guys Wednesday.

We're going to run both classes. But, as long as there are enough people myself and Hobbyman will stay out of stock b/c we feel it is a good place for you guys to develop your skills. As far as gearing run the biggest pinion you can find. We wound up running 14t last wed. for mod, so at least that for stock.
I'm not sure if we mentioned it before but the goal of the stock program is to get new people into it. With that said I consider it the learning class for those who aren't ready for full blown mod. Myself and Hobbyman will stay out of it as long as the class will stand on it's own. If people are needed to run stock we will run the stock class. The other reason is so that you guys who are strugling in mod have a class where you can win without the threat of myself, hobbyman, Dave, and Chuck. Another reason is we had a decent crowd of stock guys last year but from what I understand they were run off b/c some of the mod guys would run every now and then and piss off everyone else to the point they just stopped showing up.

I'm glad to hear you're not afraid Microjunke. The problem is so many are.
Ok I need a point clarified here. Stock means stock motor that came with kit, right? Orion elites and HPI mods would be mod class, right?
The point of stock is to keep costs down and keep the cars slow and equal, right?
Help me here Ryan and Todd!
hobbyman_7
01-07-2003, 05:57 PM
Stock means stock motor that came with kit or the Orion stock motor, which is the same as the one in the kit. Orion Elite Coreless and HPI Modified are MOD. class. The point of stock is slow cars (less or no breakage) and nothing extra needed to run the class, just buy the car and run.
Thanks Hobbyman! I am ready for stock. And I was suprised at how quick my car is with a stock motor and 14t pinion. Well, I will see how it runs. I am bringing my bigblock just in case but I don't think I can swap motors in the 2 minutes between races.

Well I went up to practice today. Dave showed up to get his car figured out. Hobbyman, I think he'll be wanting your foam setup as he got a set but couldn't find anything to work but that was before he noticed his pro pan chassis mod had come unglued.
I found that the toyota body is roughly a full lap faster than the corvette. Definitely a plus.
Hobbyman-Ed only ordered one set of foams b/c I had them both under my name and he thought the order was written wrong.
Of course they probably wouldn't have been here this week anyway but we'll find out tomorrow.
Also for the stock class it looks like we'll have one more entry tomorrow.
Nerg you hit it dead on for the point of the stock class. Last year when the micro's 1st came out we ran stock but it was more like a hack fest b/c you couldn't damage anything or throw someone into a wall which made for some extremely close racing since you could run an entire race within a foot of the car in front of you. Of course running the half hour mains allowed for enough time to catch each other. The rule of thumb for your line selection was basically if you couldn't see the car behind the board you were running a tight enough line.

I know this is silly but how can a body make that much difference? Even if you are changing the wheel base and wheel width.
RTolle
01-08-2003, 09:43 AM
Aerodynamics can make a huge difference. Although not as noticeable on the micro a change of body style on the sedan is very noticeable. For example the dodge stratus is a very nuetral body but a honda accord has more front end down force making the car feel very twichy or loose. Another example can be found on the oval cars. There is a reason why everyone runs the big rear wings vs. the little dinky ones that come with the body.

That's it! I'm drilling out the chassis, the wheels...heck...I'm going to drill holes in the batteries. How'd you do hobbyman?
RTolle
01-09-2003, 12:56 AM
I think a 51 lapper isn't out of the question either. Since I've got a new motor and bearings on the way and after I get the foams dialed in a little more and build up some confidence in there consistency it'll be even faster. Collins77 the more we push each other the faster we'll go. The question is how do we compare to others on a larger national scale. It'd be nice to go run against the brp cars in Cleveland once and see where we place. Also it may be time to start developing a carpet racing chassis for penquin. As for batteries from what I've heard you can drill a small hole in batteries and inject them with something to get more power out of them. Of course after one run the battery is no good.
I believe Hobbyman ran a 46 in the main which is the same as my best rubber tire run so I'd say he was moving pretty good.
hobbyman_7
01-09-2003, 01:12 AM
Yes I was very pleased with my 46 in the main, that's 3 laps faster than I did New Years Day! Now all I need is 3 more laps next week and I'll still be one behind you two.:D

01-09-2003, 01:21 AM

RTolle
01-10-2003, 12:07 AM
Ya know everyone says that they don't work on their cars untill they get beat.
Have you ran micro anywhere else besides Ultra and if you have how do others compare to us? I've been wondering for a while and would like to make a road trip up to the Gate in cleveland at some point and see how we compare to the guys up there.
collins77
01-10-2003, 09:32 AM
You're right...but I didn't get beat ;) --got the timepieces to prove it. But seriously, Racing is like golf...There's always someone you can beat, and there's always someone that can beat you. A carpet micro is a world away from a pavement micro...so I can't say that success on one would transfer over to the other. If one makes no mistakes during an 8 minute race, then there's a good chance he or she will be up near the front. Speed-wise, the Big Block and 4 cells puts the Micro on par with the BRPs and their stock motor. In the hands of Bud or a few of his factory-driver types, the BRP would be a tough nut to crack for an equally skilled Micro driver. Rotational weight is an issue etc...
RTolle
01-10-2003, 09:41 AM
I'm sure it would be a tough challenge to beat the brp since it is basically a pan car vs. a sedan. But it would still be fun to try and you must remember that they run 6 cell in those brp cars. You're right about micro's being like golf but it seems to me that when we're both there no one knows who is going to win untill someone does. you're also right about not being beat yet or at least on this layout.

What time will you be running on Sunday? Will they be racing Micros or will some other type of event be taking place? I've been potty traing the daughter for the past three days as my wifes grandmother passed away. I could use a break at the track! Could you please provide directions from the Cinci area to the Hamilton track, or were you talking about Columbus track?

Hope to see you there tomorrow.

We had some pretty good racing today. In micro we only had 3 people so it wasn't the biggest turnout. A new track record has been set of a 50/5:02 and an even faster run although not elligible for track record a 51/5:04 was run. I don't think a 52 lap run is out of the question now.
The best race of the day was in the 19t sedan class. Eli, Rob and some other guy battled it out for the full race.
