You know, its getting pretty bad. I have been wondering. Since these bots rely on the forums sign up to be in a default naming or how each part is listed (User name, email, passwords), what about simply mixing these up and changing the names to error out the bots?

So you ask for the email first (Im only using as example, I don't know which is first normally), then passwords then the user name. On top, rename the onscreen and offscreen input. So "Passwords" becomes "Pass?", or "User name" becomes "Identity Choice".

If possible, that would cut down on 99% of the spam getting through without drastic measures like using onscreen verification codes.

Anything that can be done to eliminate these SpamBots would be greatly appreciated. I frequent several forums, including my own club's and the SPAM is getting way out of hand.

The other mods and i are doing the best we can to keep the spamming down. I might just have a contest for the members here to enter in choosing another moderator.:D

Yea, but moderators is just a bandage on a growing problem. I don't know who actually runs the background of the tiny rc forums group, but have they ever thought of trying this? Can you ask them to look into it? Again, from what I have read up on these bots, the rely on forums who use the default naming systems on sign up pages of these forum systems. Which should mean if you can customize/tweak the php? scripts and calls even just a little, it would cut back on the amount getting through dramatically.

Guys, we've made a number of changes that should help w/ this issue; now we just need to wait to see if they completely eliminate spam, or if we need to do something more drastic. SteveM, hopefully you get my emails, but, just wanted to thank you again for always doing such a great job of notifying us of spam threads. Thanks! :)

My pleasure! I used to be the Administrator on R/C Web Board and the flood of SPAM was always a concern. Glad you have a handle on things. :)
