DSM 3-Channel Pro Series Surface Module/Rx: R-1
Overview
It wasn’t easy to improve on the Spektrum DSM™ module system. After all, the original systems have helped guys win races the world over. And everyone using Spektrum™ has benefited from the no-pins, no-crystals, no-interference, no-glitches reliability of its 2.4GHz system.
But our engineers pulled it off simply because it’s in their nature to improve and refine––to think outside the box to produce a better product. And this time the payoff is the Pro Series Module System.
While the original system adds just 5.6 milliseconds (that’s 5.6 thousandths of a second), to your radio’s own processing time, the new Pro System’s module and receiver combine to lower this already miniscule figure to a scant 3.0 milliseconds. It all adds up to lightning fast response and it’s sure to have racers feeling more connected than ever.
While Spektrum equipment has been extremely reliable for the vast majority of owners, static electricity discharges (ESD), caused rare but irritating “shutdowns” when it was used at some carpet and on-road racing venues in conditions of extremely low humidity. Well, it took some serious detective work to identify and neutralize the culprit, but we’re happy to announce that the Pro Series system incorporates changes that eliminate the problem once and for all.
To handle the rigors of competitive racing, we’ve treated your Pro Series receiver with a virtually clear conformal coating called ReliaKote.™ It’s an exclusive Spektrum plus that ensures reliable performance no matter how much dirt , gunk and motor spray works its way into your Pro Series receiver’s case.
Besides its other advances, the Pro Series system features an advanced, more rugged, premium-quality oscillator that not only shrugs off shock loads, but actually increases range via its RF link-boosting, ultra-precise frequency accuracy.
Key Features
-New programming lowers latency to 3.0ms (tx & rx combined)
-Receiver board is conformally coated to protect it from dirt and fuel
-New smoke gray case is fuel proof
-Telemetry compatible
Just when you thought you had the best thing around they had to come out with this......dang......lol....

Alfred,
From what I understand, they will work together...you just won't have the full speed benefit (not that I could tell a couple milliseconds myself!)

Good morning Tyler,
Thank you for your recent email. The Spektrum Pro Series modules will work with the original receivers. The only Spektrum module/receiver combination that cannot be mixed is the Futaba HRS system which needs both the HRS module and the HRS receiver to function. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any more assistance to you!
Thank you for your interest in Spektrum RC!

most of the updates benefit nitros and any high speed response and changes via the tweak option wouldn't readily be noticed due to the micro's already twitchy nature.

Finally got a reply back from them......its like one person says that it will work with the existing modules and one person says that it will not work.....read on.

sent them an email from the confusion, here is what i got
Hi Tyler,
Thank you for your email. I apologize for the confusion that you and your friend have experienced. Per our Spektrum team, the new modules will work with the original receivers, you just will not see the full increase in response as you would by using both the Pro series module and receiver. Each component (both the module and the receiver) in the Pro Series system reduces response time compared to the original system by approximately 1.3 milli-seconds. If you use the Pro Series module with an original receiver, you will experience the 1.3ms in faster response time. If you choose to use both the Pro Series module and receiver, you would experience a 2.6ms faster response time as compared to the original system.
Once again, I sincerely apologize for the confusion that you and your friend have experienced. I will make sure that the correct information is relayed to the persons involved.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Amanda

Hi Tyler,
We have cleared up the confusion, and the systems are cross-compatible. The only systems that you must use together are the Futaba HRS systems. Once again, I apologize for any confusion. As always, please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance to you.
Thank you for emailing me with your concerns and we appreciate your interest in Spektrum!

And this is what my email says.......
Al, here's the scoop. The confusion was related to a conversation in our Product Support training with John Adams. The question was asked if the Pro system was reverse compatible in which the response was no. This was actually in regards to the Futaba 3PK HRS transmitter and modules for Spektrum. Upon further clarification with John Adams we now know the Pro series will definitely work with the non-pro series modules and receivers but the transfer of information will be at the original rate and not the reduced latency of the Pro.
So now we are on the same page. I hope this helps, sorry for the confusion and thanks for supporting Spektrum.
