View Full Version : My MLST

Well after some debating on what micro off roader to get I finally decided to get the MLST!

It was between the Half8 and MLST. And I really don't think I could have been wrong either way!

I went with the MLST because I wanted something more of a basher and possible a racer to? And the Half8 is more of a racer than a basher.

For now it's stock and may stay that way for awhile. It's first run was onroad and it was quick but not as quick as my stock 18t. But that's to be expected since it is alot bigger!

The second run was off road and this is where this little truck certified that I made the right choice!!!!! It handles great, jumps great and is just a total blast! And it actually feels as quick as my 18t did off road! I guess because it does'nt get tossed around like the 18t.

Here's a couple of pics stock

I am using both the stock pack and a 2 cell 1320mah lipo pack! The lipo pack is nice improvement over the stock pack. Noticeably faster and great run times!

Getting some 12mm hex adapters for it and getting some new shoes for it! Probably a set of MT wheels and tires for bashing and a set of 2.2" Super Nitro wheels and buggy or rally tires!

I added a deans ultra plug to the esc and stock battery so I could run my lipo's.

Modded my stock wheels to use 3Racing alloy Half8 hexes. They are a little bigger than the stock MLST hex so I had to grind the wheel to get them to fit! It came out o.k. but most important it worked and I have a lot less wobble!

Planning to go brushless eventually, adding a mini-t ball diff and some other stuff down the line!

But I have to say I am really impressed with this truck as a basher straight out of the box!!!

Got a Half8 wing on my MLST!

Not the best spot for it but the only place I could get it on there.

Looking to see if I can find a better way to mount it?

Yeah I was going for that Stealth look!hehehe:p

MiniLSTGuy that's a bummer! I was'nt really sure which color I wanted but since big-kid had red and trd had blue I went with the green to be different! But have to say that I'm glad I did as it looks great in person!

Here's some pics of some tires I'm trying out on my MLST!

Mahalo to Ronbeck for sending me the tires to try out!

and a pic with some road hawgs!

The wheel adapters I am using are made by Hot Racing for the Half8.

They fit the axle perfect. The only issue is being how wide the mt wheels are around the hex, so the stock wheel nut only threads on about 3/4 of the way.

I have run the truck with the claw dawgs without foam inserts and have to say the truck is a blast to drive! It climbed up the grassy hill even better than stock! And handle the rocky road better to!

The stock motor and pack still had plenty of power to get these tires moving! And if I hit a bump just right it would lift the front wheels up and hold them there for about a foot.

The stock servo's had no problems either moving the big tires! And the drivetrain held up just fine!!!

Now to get a brushless!!!:D

alfred

Nice tires man.......Makes the truck look beefy..:p

Xtant3150c
12-14-2005, 09:57 PM
Yeah the Claw Dawgs look better than I thought they would!

Well I took the leap into Brushless Power today!!!!! :D

Ordered a Hyperion 6K with the Mamba 25 esc from B-P-P!

Should be alot of fun when this thing gets here!

Most likely run it a little bit but probably stick to the stock motors/esc setup for my usual bashing around! At least that's what I'm telling myself now! Figure no sense letting the stock setup go to waste! And I do like it for bashing around my house!

Big-Kid

I think that order was supposed to say TWO motors;)

Xtant3150c
12-24-2005, 05:12 AM
Well I had a few hints in my previous post about this but I guess no one noticed or just figured it was a typo!

But this is what I've been working on with my MLST!!!

Yes you read right 'DUAL HYPERION 6K's'!!!!!

First off Much Mahalo's goes to big-kid for letting me borrow his mamba esc as well as his mamba link to setup the esc's!

The install was as easy as putting one in. I opted to mount the esc's in the battery holder with the 2 Thunder Power 2cell 1320 packs mounted on top of the battery holder with both 2way tape and a tie strap! Everything fit nicely under the body!

EDIT:
I cheated to hook up both esc to the receiver as I did'nt have a chance to go and get a 'y' connector for the esc's I just used the one for the servo's! And ran only one servo for the limited time. This is definitely not the way to go as the one servo can not turn the truck at all!!!

I only got to run it for about 2 minutes as one of the front wheels flew off and I lost the axle pin and wheel nut!

I thought I had killed the center diff, as I was giving it throttle and the 3 remaining wheels would hardly move! But when I got home and got the front wheel back on everything was working fine!!! I guess the diff was just unloading all the power to the axle without the wheel.

For the little run I had this thing is KRAZY!!! Holding it in my hand and giving it full throttle it would twist my hand! And this is with the lowest settings!

It would pull the front wheels up a little on the road, but it was a little rocky so not great traction.

I would have to say that I think a single hyperion 6k and 3 cell would be a cleaner setup and still be pretty dang fast! But like I said I had to try it!

I hope to get a little more run time with it later? And hopefully get a video of it in action!!!

Enjoy!

Dang man...dual Bl's....what are you trying to do, get the lst to fly.....So hows the run time with this setup of yours man....i bet its fast as hell...

Xtant3150c
12-24-2005, 05:16 PM
Yeah it's pretty fast alfred!:D

I have'nt been able to run it for very long. First run was a couple of minutes before a front tire flew off!hehehe

This morning got another couple of minutes before the front tire flew off again!

Got it fixed and got around 10 minutes before the center diff called it a day!hehehehe

I was even more impressed today as the truck was pulling wheelies from a stand still with ease!!! And this is with all the esc setting set at low!!!

I would say mid to high 30's with the stock gearing and 2.2" MT wheels/tires.

Gonna put the mini-t ball diff in and try and get some video of it in action! Try with stock gearing again, than try the stock pinions with the 50t spur.

Than I can go to the single motor setup instead! So that my truck's drive train will have a longer life span!!!hehehe

Xtant3150c
12-24-2005, 08:05 PM
Well took my MLST apart in anticipation of putting my mini-t ball diff in, but it was'nt the center diff that let go today it was the rear diff pinion gear that quit!

So truck is down and out for now until I can find the parts?

Here's a pic of the destruction!hehehe

12-28-2005, 05:59 PM
Yeah Alfred I got what I expected!hehehehe LMAO!!!

But actually it lasted longer than I though it would!hehehe

It might have survived the day if I had set the punch control on the mamba's correctly!:o

I thought I had it set at the lowest setting, but turns out it was turned off! So the motors where getting full power from the get go!

Will be getting parts to fix it this week! Mahalo to Ronbeck for that!!!

And will get some video of it in action to!

Also got my Half8 wing mounted onto my MLST! Used the trust B4 wing mounts! Just put a screw through the shock tower and into the mount.

Not the best setup but it works!

Sorry no body on shots yet as my truck is still in pieces!:p

Well with nothing better to do than take pics of my truck!;)

Here's some pics with the Dakota body and the half8 wing.

Looks a little better to me as the Dakota has a lower stance to it, but the white wing does'nt exactly match the paint scheme/colors!

So I guess I'll be getting a Parma wing to paint black to match this body!:D

Well got to run my MLST for the first time in 2 weeks last night!!!

Met up with big-kid and shot a little bit of video of the Dual Hyperion 6k's in action!!!

For this run I set the punch control on the mamba esc to 50% to be on the safe side.

I tried running the slipper gear a little looser, but this setup just has to much torque! ;) So I ended up running it about a half turn out from locked.

The truck still had enough power to plant the rear end down on launches from both a standstill and rolling start!

With the stock gearing I would guess the speed in the mid 30's range? And this is with the timing set at low as well.

We than changed to punch control to 20%. This allowed the truck to lift the front wheels about 2 inches off the ground from a standstill!

Most impressive is that the truck lasted the whole night of around 20 or more high speed passes!

After taking the truck apart to boil the diff pinion gears the gears showed no signs of wear! And the boiled gears will be even better!

I had originally thought that running a slightly looser slipper would help take some strain off of the diff pinion gears, but with a torquey brushless motor it will just slip to much with anything beyond a turn our from locked!

I think if you are running a mamba esc it would be a good idea to set the punch control between 20%-50% to have less power sent to the drivetrain off the start. And that although it will take away the kewl wheelies it will should allow your truck to survive a little longer!hehehe

Remember though that this is based off my Dual Hyperion 6k's with stock gearing, so you will want to play around with the punch control settings for your particular motor and gearing?

Xtant3150c
01-17-2006, 06:32 PM
Well took the Dual Hyperion setup off my truck!

It was fun but way to much!:D

Running a single Hyperion 6kv motor now. I like this layout a lot better as it is a cleaner looking setup! And I'm sure it will still be plenty of fun to drive!

Made a cover for the open motor mount out of lexan and this doubling as a mount for my receiver!

Nicely done:D

I like how you ended up mounting the Off/On switch;) , good job. It's always been a thorn in my side because the little bugger would always mange to wiggle it's way free:rolleyes:

Have you had a chance to let the single Hyperion get a good work out yet;) ?

Xtant3150c
01-18-2006, 04:28 PM
Unfortunately not yet!:(

Gonna try and see if I can get a run in today?

Yeah I ended up cutting off those 2 little ramp looking pieces on the top plate. The switch position works good with the lipo packs, but I don't think the stock pack will fit with the switch there. But I guess that only matters if I'm going to run the stock pack which I highly doubt!

Hopefully my other MLST will be in the mail today?:D

And big did you get your CAW chassis yet?

Well my newly aquired MLST Roller finally came in today!!!:D

Spent the later part of the afternoon boiling the replacement gears to put in it and greased up the diffs as well.

I am using my stock rtr gear in this truck, as I want it as a Stock Basher!

I also put my Hitec Aggressor FM radio gear in my Hyperion 6k MLST.

As well as some new Blue Bearings from Team Blue Star! They only have the 4x8mm bearings though. So I put them in the wheel hubs and will be using them to replace the other 4x8mm bearings in the diff housings.

They look really good! And the blue seals should keep dirt out better than the stockers!

The roller also came with a CAW extended axle/wheel hex kit!!! So that found it's way on to the Hyperion 6k MLST as well!;)

Although I am still running the stock wheels/tires for now! I have my set of 2.2" MT wheels and street tires, but want to look for a 2.2" buggy wheel/tire combo maybe?

Here's a pic of my Dual MLST's!:D

01-22-2006, 01:25 PM

Xtant3150c
01-26-2006, 09:56 PM
HEHEHEHE You wish man!;)

Yeah the vid came out pretty good to me at least!

I think most people forget the weight of this truck and expect it to do 50mph like nothing!

For a 2cell lipo and 6kv motors it's pretty quick to me! I would estimate between 25-30mph, based on what b-p-p got with the 5kv motor and 2cell lipo with stock gearing (22mph).

I was happy with it! And still am with the single bl now!

Xtant3150c
02-22-2006, 06:59 PM
Got in my 3Racing shocks today!:D

They are noticeably longer than the stockers. I had heard about this but most have said they were not this long!

Not a real problem though, just gonna cut some springs down so I can get a arms at level ride height. Probably cut a set of stock springs and see how they do, the stock springs are quite a bit longer than the 3Racing springs. So I should be able to cut them and still use the adjustable collar?

They are very smooth to me and look great!!!:D

And the longer shock should be good for those off road bashers out there!

Xtant3150c
02-22-2006, 07:00 PM
Gonna try and get out to the lhs and look for some racing shoes for the MLST!;)

Here's a pic showing the difference between the stock and 3Racing shocks.

alfred
02-22-2006, 08:10 PM
Dang those 3racing shocks are nice and beefy.....and there a tad bit longer as well......so did you put them on yet....how do you like it.

Xtant3150c
02-23-2006, 03:05 AM
Yup I got them mounted up already!hehehe;)

But we have had a lot of rain the past few days so no chance to run it yet!

From just pushing the truck up and down I think they feel pretty good! The parts have a good fit to them.

I liked the stock shocks, just had a couple of bad shock bodies causing leaks.

Hopefully get some run time in with them soon?

On another note, no luck finding racing shoes for my MLST!

I wanted white rims but the shop only had yellow. I got to look at the 2.0" losi step pins and they should work fine with the MLST rims!!!

I want to run the 2.0" losi step pins with the MLST rims for my brushless truck, as the step pins work really good on the track!

Big-Kid
02-23-2006, 04:49 AM
Ooohhh, looking good there Xtant:D

They really are pushing those arms up though aren't they:rolleyes:

Bummer on the tires. Was he out of the new treads?

Run time outdorrs:eek: . You must be joking right:) . Unless you're ready to make a hoover-boat out of your MLST:p . your side must have been filled with small lakes and ponds:D . I think I did hear they were predicting sunny days later on this week, but don't hold your breath just yet.

SF's might get the new Losi springs in. I asked him last week and said they may come in soon. I told him he's getting in all of the new parts first, and he was pleased about that fact. Most of the other shops haven't even got in anmy of the parts he's already sold of like the grren springs or CF decks. Go figure. The smallest shop is getting everything first:rolleyes: .Well, at least he's selling them, so that means he's making $ from them:cool:

Xtant3150c
02-24-2006, 04:26 AM
Yeah the 3Racing shocks are pushing the ride height up for sure!

So I cut a pair of stock green springs in half! They were a little short, but this way I only had to use 1 pr of springs!

I ended up using the spring collar from the stock shocks as a spacer and this worked well! The adjusting collar is about 4mm from top in the front and 6mm in the back.

The truck is now sitting with the arms just above level! A much better look for the track! The shocks still feel good with this shorter spring setup!

The springs are about 25mm long. I think a 30mm to 35mm spring would be more ideal, and than you would not need the extra spacer.

I did'nt go into Flemings figured they did'nt have the rims so why bother!hehehe

Plus he just got his shipment so I'm sure the place was wrecked!:p

I'll probably try and stop by there tomorrow? I want to see if he has a FTB4 and a GTB?:D

The funny thing is it does'nt seem like the other shops even know about MLST parts!

At Aloha's he did'nt even know about the rims! And I went to 10th ave. today and besides having nothing in stock but stock wheels/tires they did'nt know about the dish rims either!

Forgot to mention that Aloha's had a PTI Goliath that someone was selling! It was very tempting, but I had to resist! For now at least!!!;)

Big-Kid
02-24-2006, 04:52 AM
Whoa, thats like half the spring there. I'm glad you found a way to get the ride height back:D .

So would the spring be the right length if it were cut to 30-35mm then? The stock green spring must be around 50-55mm then?

Ooohh, an FTB4:D . Is that what your almost set at? No Lazer, Goliath or maybe even a 3.3 REVO;) :p :D

I like the Goliath. If I went down the rock climber path, i'd look at one of those or build one thats sorta similar. Buuutt, I do have my own B4 to buold first and play with.

I've actually got my R/C $ stash that I haven't counted. I'm pretty sure there's enough for that GTB. I was half way there before I sold my RS4 to TRD. His $ should give me enough to cover it:D .

If SF's doesn't have what you want (like perhaps a 3.3REVO), i'm sure Scott would be more than willing to wheel and deal.

Big-Kid
02-24-2006, 04:57 AM
Go figure that no one else has some of the new parts???

Maybe thats the explaination right there. If they don't know about them, they wouldn't be able to order them too.

And then 10th ave has a NT18 sitting right there on there shelf??? Go figure that one out:rolleyes:

10th ave and alohas have the LST2 if your intrested;) . And the Hellfire as well:cool:

Xtant3150c
02-24-2006, 10:22 PM
Well I guess I answered all of my questions today!hehehe As well as help big answer one of his!hehehe

We both bought Novak GTB 6.5r's!!!

And I bought my new rc today as well!!!

A Factory Team B4!!!

I really wanted the brushless and figured that it might kill my XXT, so I was leaning toward the FTB4 since I might be in the market for a new racer after abusing the XXT with the GTB!!!:D

I also got my white dish rims and king pin tires for my brushless MLST!

I got shot down with my idea for the 2.0 step pins as the bead area on the MLST rim is to small for these tires. But I know that I can always go to some 1/10th dish rims with the 2.0's and now be able to use them on both the MLST and the FTB4!!!

Yeah that REVO 3.3 looks KILLAHZ!!! I would'nt mind getting into nitro one day and this would be a good choice! The LST2 is sweet and comes with alot of good stuff to!!!

But I think making the jump to nitro might mean the end of the MLST? As nitro is a lot more to deal with.

Just saw the price on the T-Maxx 3.3 on towers for $482! That's about $90 more than the 2.5, so would have to assume about the same mark up on the REVO 3.3 so around $570 maybe? And you still get that lame radio gear! But the LST2 is HUGE, and to go race that on the smallish BP track?

Man I better stop thinking about something else and start thinking about the stuff I have now!hehehe

Xtant3150c
03-20-2006, 05:25 AM
Man it's been a while!hehehe

Well I got to put some step pins on my MLST! I used B4 wheels to put the step pins on.

It look pretty good to me! But should look even better with my incoming Mono Tuning wide track kit!:D

Got to run my MLST on Saturday! First time in months! Was the first run with the MIP ball diff, and with my luck it had loosened it self somehow? So my runtime was shot down to 3minutes!

And man the Hype 6kv was spinning that diff so fast the outdrives were scorching!!!

So no racing yesterday? Bummer :( . Thats why we need an indoor off-road track:D . Are you ready to hit the Megabucks to make this happen:p ?

Hopefully the rain has had enough of pounding us for a week or so. Some constant sunshine would be nice:D

I wonder who will be trying to race their MLST's at the RcMadness race? It will be intresting to see how they fare:cool:

Got some pics of my MLST with some TLT-1 stock tires on it using the CAW hexes!

And man does this setup really widen the MLST!

I think this setup would look good with that new Parma custom truck body!hehe

Still waiting for some useful hop up parts like stronger diff pinion gears or some sealed diff gears?

But my truck is still running good and a lot of fun since adding a 3cell lipo pack to it!

A 3cell really shows the potential of the MLST! It is kind of sad that Losi did'nt build it a little stronger to handle this kind of power!

They should have know this is what us krazy 1/18th guys have been doing!!!hehehe;)

i recentley bought a mini lst and i have to say this thing is sweet!!! i will handel anything i throw at it (mainley 8th scale tracks) and i have cleared all the jumps no problem. im running a 6800kv mamba and 2 cell lipo. i havent stripped a rung or pinion gear yet. and i am still running the stock ones, just lubed them.
i am also running a dual pad slipper and center ball diff with some other small upgrades.

this thing is just fun.

Congrats on the MLST MicroRS4guy!

Yah I really like my truck a lot!!! Although I don't run as often as I would like to:( It has been holding up fine for me!

I also bought a TLT-1 last week!

I'll post a pic here for now since it is all stock for now!;)

Maybe I'll start a TLT thread once I get the body painted and start modding it?

Well took my MLST apart in anticipation of putting my mini-t ball diff in, but it was'nt the center diff that let go today it was the rear diff pinion gear that quit!

So truck is down and out for now until I can find the parts?

Here's a pic of the destruction!hehehe

Xtant,

Thats was the post i was looking for or expecting! :)

Um yah I'll get right on those pics! As soon as I can find that dang MLST? :p ;)

Sorry but the MLST is long gone!

And big don't get me started on getting another one!!!:p I was getting a little itchy when all the talk about new diff pinion gears started up? But since it seems that it is still an issue, it's safe to say that I will keep waiting for a real fix to this problem!!!
